We had a massive thunderstorm during rush hour yesterday. Either the heavy rain or a lightning strike set off the RR Crossing gates on one of the primary routes. People started running the gates, but it was a slow process since only one car could go through at a time. I was lucky enough to be close enough to the front when the gates went down to see what was happening and knew there was an alternate back route.
It wasn’t a good day for commuting in Baton Rouge!

I hate doing that, even if I know it’s completely safe to cross. Just unnerving.

A note to everyone contemplating to drive/ride/walk through a closed crossing: don’t. If you think there’s a malfunction, contact the local police or the railway manager, but do not risk your life. The coefficient of friction between train wheels and the rail is about 0.3, but can get as low as 0.1, depending on the conditions, so chances are high you’ll be crushed before the train stops.
